Congress leader Ibrahim Kodijal on Thursday extended his support for the practice of polygamy as “it is necessary for a man to satisfy his sexual desires”. The leader, who hails from Karnataka, addressed a press conference in Mangaluru and said that if the wife is unwell, she would not be able to get involved in the act of sex. Hence, to stop the husband from proceeding to a sex worker, it is essential that polygamy was allowed.
According to Kodijal, “Islam says you must not go to a sex worker, if you want, you can marry again.” He said that Islam allowed polygamy as it strongly condemns going to sex workers. He further said that Islam only allows a man to get married more than once, only if he is physically and financially capable of taking care of her. Ibrahim Kodijar has been a member of the Congress party for the last 46 years and made these statements while responding to a question on the Uniform Civil code.
Earlier, in 2015, Ibrahim Kodijal had hit the news for his controversial and conservative remarks on women. Kodijar has been known to be a staunch supporter of Zakir Naik and according to reports by The News Minute, he was among the organisers for an event that was supposed to host the televangelist, which was cancelled later. Kodijal responded to a question on Zakir Naik’s views that skimpily dressed women are more likely to get raped and said that Islam forbade both men and women from exposing their body. He also explained his logic behind these statements with a reference to an erection and said, “Men get sensation”. When asked about the men trying to control their urges, he said that women cover themselves up everywhere; Punjab, Gujarat and many other places.
