At least 9 people have died and more than a dozen people are feared trapped under debris when a roof of a bus stand collapsed in Coimbatore’s Somanur on Thursday. As per the report by ANI, the roof crashed to the ground in Somanur town today in the afternoon. At least 20 people are believed to be trapped under the debris, as per the report. The rescue operation is underway. As of now, there is no official confirmation of the cause of the incident, however, as per the report by the Indian Express, it is being speculated that the collapse was caused due to rain.

DMK leader MK Stalin offered his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the incident. He further took a jibe at the Tamil Nadu government for its inefficiency. He was quoted by the Indian Express as saying, “When it comes to Tamil Nadu, not just the roof, but the government’s foundation is also rotten. This situation will change very soon.”

As per the report by Times of India, people were waiting for the buses when the concrete ceiling about 50 feet in length collapsed trapping several men and women underneath. The report also said that at least three ambulances were rushed to the spot, which later took the injured to private hospitals and Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital.
