Clashes were reported from Uttar Pradesh’s Rae Bareli minutes after Congress president Rahul Gandhi addressed a public gathering on Monday. The Congress president, who is on a two day visit to the state, attended an event in Rae Bareli enroute to his Lok Sabha constituency Amethi.
Blaming Congress workers for the clashes, BJP MLA Dal Bahadur Kori said: “We were attacked by Congress workers”. As per television reports, a number of BJP workers were protesting Rahul Gandhi’s visit with placards and banners. Police officials and Amethi MLC Deepak Singh also had an argument during the tussle. As per India Today, BJP workers also accused the Congress of land grabbing.
Addressing a public meeting in Rae Bareli earlier in the day, Rahul hit out at the Yogi Adityanath government over its failure to start any project in the Uttar Pradesh city since coming to power. “Which project did the state government start in Rae Bareli?” he asked while addressing the gathering.
Also targetting Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with Yogi Adityanath, Rahul Gandhi further said that while both of them give big speeches, they fail on delivery. Pointing out their promise of providing employment to two crore people in Uttar Pradesh, he asked, “Is there even one person who has been given employment by the government?”
Accusing the ruling party in the state of spreading lies, “It is Congress workers’ duty to expose the false things being said by it (BJP)”. Taking up the issue of unemployment in the state, the Congress president also said that China gives employment to 50,000 people almost on daily basis as compared to around 450 people in India.
Meanwhile, while addressing another rally in Amethi, the Congress president announced the construction of a food park in the constituency. “No matter what happens, food park will be built here and I will do this work. As soon as our government comes into power, food park will be made and farmers’ products will be sold at the right prices. I will make this happen,” ANI quoted Rahul as saying.
Earlier on Monday, as he arrived in Rae Bareli, chief minister Yogi Adityanath advised him to focus on development politics instead of “negative politics”. “The Congress president should give up doing negative politics,” Adityanath said as per PTI. When asked how he consider Rahul Gandhi’s first vist in the state since becoming party president, he said: “See the plight of his Lok Sabha constituency – Amethi – nursed by four generations of Nehru-Gandhi family.”
Hitting out as his predecessor, Akhilesh Yadav, he said as per PTI, “SP workers killed innocent villagers in Azamgarh with spurious liquor and were also caught in Hardoi for making spurious liquor. They tried to disturb the environment in Lucknow which is not good” .
