China on Thursday called for a code of conduct pact with India to maintain peace along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), rather than the clarification of the border as proposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to Beijing last month.

According to reports, Chinese Foreign Ministry Deputy Director General for Asian Affairs Huang Xilian has said that both sides should try to reach an agreement as past attempts to clarify mutual positions on the LAC had encountered difficulties.

Beijing reportedly states that the border dispute with India is confined to 2,000 kilometres, much of it along the Arunachal Pradesh border, while New Delhi asserts that the dispute covers around 4,000 kilometres, including the Aksai Chin area annexed by China in 1962 war.
