Chief Justice of India TS Thakur broke down on Saturday while addressing students at Central Basic School in Jammu. The CJI expressed his grief over the burning of schools in Kashmir and called education as the only way to progress and it should not be compromised. Amid the students who were keen to listen the CJI, he mentioned the power of education and encouraged them to get educated and contribute in the development of the nation.
He sought attention towards the poor infrastructure of the school and related it with the bad education scenario in the state. “In last 50 years,we have even gone to Mangalyaan, but there has been no change in the infrastructure of this school. It has same old broken chairs,” he said. He blamed “extremism” for it. “I know situation is bad in region since last 25-30 years because of extremism,” he said. However, he emphasised education as an only way to lead and expressed hope among the students that they will understand this. “Government is facing a lot of challenges but education is one thing which can not be compromised as it is only way to progress,” said the CJI on the occasion.

Meanwhile, speaking on the occasion, he became emotional while recalling incidence where schools were burned in the valley. He called it a practice by those who do not want students to get educated and therefore it becomes easy for them to put the young generation towards “jihadiyat”. “You must have seen how some schools are being burned in Kashmir and many schools are being neglected in Jammu,” he said by adding that the hope still existed that the situation can be better in near future.
