In an unprecedented crackdown on motorists racing their vehicles on city outskirts during weekends, the Chennai police, on Sunday, had seized 10 luxury cars, with men of less than 30 years, behind the wheels driving in a\u00a0rash manner on the East Coast Road (ECR) during early hours of the day. The police had also arrested a driver for allegedly injuring one police official who tried to stop the racing vehicles.The luxury supercars seized by the police including a Ferrari, two Lamborghinis, a Mercedes and an Audi, were of a total estimated cost of Rs 30 crore. According to a report by The New Indian Express, the driver of the Lamborgini ran his vehicle over the foot of an inspector who tried to stop the cars, and was booked under IPC sections 506 and 336. However the driver was later released on bail. Pollice officials had claimed that the vehicles were modified with advanced silencers which created defeaning noise to create chaos among the commuters. Officials had confirmed that the vehicles were running at a speed of 150 km per hour while the maximum permissible speed is 60 km per hour within the city limits. As the entertainment crorridor of the city, the East Coast Road gets waves of people with several hotels, resorts, shopping complexes and movie theaters, the number of road accidents in the area has also increased over the years. Last year an auto-rickshaw driver was killed and six others injured as a speeding Porsche allegedly hit them. In another instance in June, a daily wage labour was killed after a allegedly drunk techie ran his Audi over him.
