“The situation in the costal districts of Tamil Nadu as well as Puducherry and the neighbouring coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh is pretty grim. Luckily the rains have little bit receded but the situation is still challenging. So, we are running round the clock medical facilities for whoever needs it,” Prabhu told the media here.

“We offered shelters to lot of people in the platforms. We distributed thousands of food packets not only to commuters but to others. One lakh bottles of Rail Neer have been dispatched to Tamil Nadu,” he added.

Prabhu further said the damage is enormous, adding that the government is doing its best.

The flood situation in Chennai and its suburbs is improving as rain has taken a break since last two days except for the isolated showers.

However, as the problem of water logging persists, the rescue teams are reaching out to the marooned areas including those that were not so far not reached.

Road connectivity within Chennai is improving with the resumption of transport in a segment of the arterial Saidapet bridge that was inaccessible earlier.

Civilian flights are to be operated from the naval airfield at INS Rajali, Arakkonam, 90 kilometers west of Chennai.
