Madhya Pradesh Municipal Election Phase 1 Result: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday thanked BJP’s winning candidates, party workers and voters “for reposing their faith in BJP in Madhya Pradesh civic polls.” After BJP’s resounding win in the first phase of results for the state municipal elections, PM Modi took to Twitter and said, “This victory is a symbol of the unwavering faith of the people in the @ChouhanShivraj government of the state. Many congratulations to the party workers as well as all the winning candidates.” Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan also congratulated the winners, and thanked voters after BJP won in seven municipal corporations, including Satna, Sagar, Khandwa Ujjain, Bhopal, Indore and Burhanpur. However, BJP suffered a setback as it lost four municipal corporations to the Opposition. Congress has emerged victorious in Kamal Nath’s bastion Chhindwara, Gwalior and Jabalpur municipal corporations. Days after Delhi Chief Minister and AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal’s road show in Singrauli, party’s mayoral candidate Rani Agarwal registered a big win in Singrauli Municipal Corporation, second-richest local body in the state in terms of revenue, defeating BJP’s Chandra Pratap Vishwakarma by 9,159 votes. An elated Kejriwal took to Twitter to celebrate Agarwal’s win and said that the people are noticing AAP’s ‘honest politics’ everywhere. BJP has swept the councilor elections in the municipal corporations, winning 71 out of 85 wards in Indore, 55 out of 85 wards in Bhopal, 39 out of 79 wards in Jabalpur, 35 out of 66 wards in Gwalior, 37 out of 54 wards in Ujjain, 30 out of 50 wards in Khandwa, 40 out of 48 wards in Sagar, 24 out of 45 in Singrauli, and 24 out of 48 in Burhanpur. Similarly, BJP has won 20 and Congress has won 19 out of 45 wards in Satna.

Earlier in the day, Indore’s mayoral candidate Sanjay Shukla, while claiming harassment at the hands of the local police and administration, sat on dharna outside the Indore Stadium. He alleged that despite having valid passes, the Congress workers were not being allowed to enter the stadium where the counting is taking place.

The counting of votes for the first phase of municipal elections in Madhya Pradesh started at 9 am on Sunday. Elections to 133 civic bodies, including 11 municipal corporations, 36 municipal councils and 86 town councils in the first phase were held on July 6. BJP has won 108 out of the 133 civic bodies. The first phase saw a voter turnout of 61 per cent. The counting for the second phase of urban bodies elections will be held on July 20.
