The Appointments Committee of Cabinet has approved the extension of terms of Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi as also Solicitor General Ranjit Kumar as also four others.

The Appointments Committee of Cabinet has approved the extension of terms of Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi as also Solicitor General Ranjit Kumar as also four others, a PTI report said. As per the order of the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), the terms of these officials have been extended until further orders.
The Additional Solicitor Generals, whose terms have been extended for the indefinite period, include Maninder Singh, Pinky Anand, Tushar Mehta, P S Narasimha and P S Patwalia, it said.
Mukul Rohatgi was appointed as the country’s chief law officer in June 2014 for a three-year term. Son of-Delhi High Court judge Justice Awadh Behari Rohatgi, he represented Gujarat government in the Supreme Court in numerous cases including 2002 Gujarat riots, fake encounter death cases, Best Bakery and Zahira Sheikh cases.
He had also represented businessman Anil Ambani in top court in the gas dispute case between the Ambani brothers.Mukul Rohatgi has also represented Italian embassy in top court in a case relating to two Italian marines who have accused of killing two fishermen off the Kerala coast in 2012.
Apart from these cases, Mukul Rohatgi had also appeared on behalf of big companies in the 2G scam trial.

In May, he had termed the All India Muslim Personal Law Board’s affidavit in top court on its advisory on triple talaq a “mere eyewash.” He had said that it was an attempt to gain “legal sanctity among the community”, a PTI report said.
He had also questioned the locus of the AIMPLB to issue notification against the triple talaq practice and added that it was a “desperate attempt” by it to shift the attention of the apex court.
