The murder of journalist Rajdeo Ranjan in Siwan district of Bihar and subsequent events related to it have attracted a lot of media attention. According to a media report, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) will take over the probe into the matter. The 42-year-old was shot dead by criminals near a fruit market in Siwan on May 13. The incident sparked an outrage and the issue of lawlessness in Bihar was debated and discussed. The opposition accused the state government led by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar of bringing back ‘Jungle Raj’ in the state. “A CBI team will soon leave for Siwan,” the report said.
A controversy erupted when Mohammad Kaif, who is wanted for the murder of the journalist, was spotted with mafia don and four-term former MP of Lalu Prasad’s RJD Mohammad Shahabuddin. Shahabuddin was released on bail from Bhagalpur jail on September 10.
Meanwhile, the spouse of slain journalist Rajdeo Ranjan has urged Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to provide her justice following the release of Shahabuddin from jail. According to a media report, Asha Ranjan said her family was experiencing “sleepless nights” ever since Shahabuddin, allegedly involved in Ranjan’s killing, was released on bail on September 10 by the Patna High Court.
Asha, a contractual teacher in a government-run school in Siwan, said she feared for her family in the backdrop of the alleged shooter, Mohammad Kaif, being seen accompanying Shahabuddin at his release. In an impassioned appeal to Kumar, she said: “Shahabuddin was released on bail. He is out of jail, I and my family are living under the shadow of fear.”
