Central Bureau of Investigation has requested UAE Government to extradite Augusta Westland middleman Christian Michel to examine role of politicians and bureaucrats, sources told ANI on Friday. Days ago, Central Government, believing Michel to be residing in London, had asked the UK Government to extradite him. Michel, the alleged middleman, in multi-crore scam, made headlines when he admitted that he did describe Congress president Sonia Gandhi in a letter as ‘the driving force’ of the decision to acquire new helicopters when her party was in power.
In an interview to NDTV, Michel had said that he does not personally know either Sonia Gandhi or her son, Rahul Gandhi. He also maintained that his writings were only the suggestions that they be lobbied by diplomats and it doesn’t really mean bribes were paid to them. When asked about his comments that they played no part in the controversy, Michel told the channel, “I have to protect the Gandhis to protect myself,” and added, “I have to prove they are innocent to prove my innocence.” The official had also claimed that that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had met his Italian counterpart in New York last year and had offered to release two Italian marines imprisoned in India in exchange for information about the VVIP chopper deal. Augusta Westland is a multi-crore scam which took place under UPA rule. Top Congress leaders like Sonia Gandhi, AK Antony among others have been named in the scam.
