Cabinet on Wednesday approved the Shops and Establishment Act according to which movie theaters, stores, restaurants, banks and other such businesses can remain open 24×7.

Currently, only larger manufacturing units and service-sector firms have the freedom to operate 24X7; in case of other units, while some states have specified thresholds for this leeway, no benchmark has been defined by others.

The labour ministry expects the Act will provide a fillip to the country’s retail sector by ensuring a level playing field between online and offline retailers. Consumers are likely to be benefited too.

The Cabinet today also approved the recommendations of the Seventh Pay Commission, which includes a 23.6% hike in the salaries and pensions of central government employees.
