Budget Session Highlights: President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday addressed the joint sitting of the two Houses ahead of the Budget Session. This was the President’s first address to the joint sitting of Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha members after assuming office last July. After she reached Parliament, she was received by Vice-President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and other dignitaries. After the President’s address, the Economic Survey will be tabled. Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the Budget on February 1. Opposition parties are demanding discussion on a host of issues including the BBC documentary row, the Adani- Hindenburg issue, women’s reservation Bill, price rise, Centre’s alleged bias in revenue sharing, among others.
Ahead of the Budget Session, PM Modi addressing the media said that it is a matter of pride that the President was addressing both the Houses. Meanwhile, the Bharat Rashtra Samithi, and Aam Aadmi Party said they will boycott the President’s address to protest against the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre.

“My government has awakened the aspirations of the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes. This is the same class which was most deprived of the benefits of development. Now that basic facilities are reaching this class, and these people are able to have new dreams,” says President Murmu.
“My government is of the clear opinion that corruption is the biggest enemy of democracy and social justice. That's why a continuous fight against corruption is going on for the past years. We have ensured that the honest will be respected in the system,” President Murmu.
“Today, through this session, I express my gratitude to the countrymen that they have elected a stable government for two consecutive terms. My government always kept the country's interest paramount, showed the will to completely change the policy-strategy,” says President Murmu.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will also boycott the address. AAP leader and MP Sanjay Singh said, “With all due respect to President Droupadi Murmu, we are boycotting the joint sitting of Parliament as the government has failed on all fronts and has not fulfilled its promises”.
BRS leader K Keshava Rao has said his party will boycott the President's address. Rao, who is also the Bharat Rashtra Samithi's floor leader in Rajya Sabha, said his party is “boycotting in protest against the failure of BJP-led NDA government at the Centre on all fronts of governance”.
In her maiden address, President Droupadi Murmu will address members of both Houses in the Parliament's Central Hall on the first day of a session.

The Budget session will have 27 sittings and will continue till April 6 with a month-long recess to examine the budget papers. The government plans to bring around 36 bills – including four related to the budgetary exercise – during the session. The first part of the session will conclude on February 14, and it will again reconvene on March 12 for the second part.
