Violence erupted today near Allahabad University after a Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader was shot dead last night, according to CNN News18 report. Supporters have gone berserk torching public vehicles in protest against the Uttar Pradesh police, the report says. BSP leader Rajesh Yadav was allegedly shot dead near the Tarachand hostel of the prestigious varsity. It has been learnt that Yadav had contested the assembly elections from the Jaunpur seat.
Earlier on April 29, violence had rocked the Allahabad University campus here after the arrest of four students for allegedly disrupting a meeting and violating prohibitory orders, according to PTI report. A group of students, led by office bearers of the students union had then surrounded the university’s guest house in the noon, where the executive council meeting was going on and shouted slogans demanding action against alleged financial irregularities in the institute, SSP Shalabh Mathur was quoted as saying by PTI.
That time, students allegedly torched a bus parked near a hostel and set fire to a pile of old tyres on one of the roads, bringing traffic to a standstill, the report said.
On April 17, the Allahabad High Court had directed the district magistrate and the Senior Superintendent of Police to provide “full assistance to Allahabad University authorities” in evicting illegal occupants from the varsity’s hostels, PTI had reported.
