A British Airways, London-Chennai flight was struck by lightning has been grounded in Chennai since July 23. Soon after take off the plane was hit by a lightning on Saturday afternoon, the Times of India reported. According to a source, there was no malfunction after the lightning hit the plane in London airspace. The crew, therefore, decided to go ahead with the journey that continued for almost 10-hour as the flight made its way to Chennai. However, the aircraft landed safely after reaching the city. But after an inspection at the airport, it was found that the plane suffered significant damage, the report added.

While British Airways in its statement did not comment on the lightning strike, its statement read:”We apologised to customers and rebooked them onto alternative services after our flight from Chennai to London was cancelled on Sunday following a technical issue. The safety and security of our customers and crew is always our priority and the aircraft is being inspected by our highly qualified engineers before it returns to service.”

The statement from the international carrier confirms that the plane has been grounded since Sunday. The return flight to London from Chennai was cancelled and they are trying to resolve the technical issue. The Indian aviation agencies have also sought a report on the issue. The latest Dreamliner (Boeing 787) aircraft is used by the British Airways on London-Chennai route and also other routes destined for Indian cities. The modern airplanes are built with latest technologies to withstand lightning strikes and it rarely causes structural damage to aircraft. However, a lightning strike can also affect aircraft’s compasses, avionics and engine, as per ToI. On March 7, it was reported that a Pacific Coastal Airlines’ flight was hit by lightning during its final approach into Powell River Airport, causing an explosion that was heard throughout the Powell River area, as per prpeak.com.
