At a time when being politically correct is becoming a thing of the past, Maharashtra Cheif Minister Devendra Fadnavis comes across as a “misfit” politician.

At a time when being politically correct is becoming a thing of the past, Maharashtra Cheif Minister Devendra Fadnavis comes across as a “misfit” politician. But the stupendous success of Bharatiya Janata Party in Maharashtra civic body elections under his leadership shows people still have a taste for such “misfit” politicians — that being politically correct can still get you votes.

Unlike his firebrand ally in Maharashtra, Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray, Fadnavis refrains from making unsavory comments against opponents and likes to talk only about development related issues, including a digital revolution in Maharashtra. It is this trait of Fadnavis that has made him a popular CM of the the state and also helped him create his own zone of influence, beyond the much popular and charismatic Prime Minister Narendra Modi and even some other successful BJP chief ministers like Shivraj Singh Chauhan of Madhya Pradesh, Vasundhara Raje of Rajasthan or Raman Singh of Chattisgarh.

Fadnavis’ success today was immediately recognised by the top leadership of BJP. PM Modi himself took to the Twitter to congratulate Fadnavis, saying, “I congratulate the entire team of @BJP4Maharashtra, CM @Dev_Fadnavis & @raosahebdanve for working tirelessly among the people.”

“Through hardwork, determination & work on the ground, BJP is now a strong force both in urban & rural Maharashtra. Congrats to Karyakartas (workers),” he added. A jubilant Fadnavis credited PM Modi for the famous win across Maharashtra. He also told reporters, “Our politics consists of trust and transparency. This result is a reflection that people have accepted our style of governance. No other party in the last 25 years has got such a wonderful result.”

“In BMC, we have got an amazing response. Our agenda of transparency and accountability been accepted by people,” Fadnavis added.

Under Fadnavis’ leadership, BJP today won 8 out of 10 municipal corporations including some of the biggest cities of Maharashtra. The icing on the cake was BJP’s unexpected rise in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation elections, where the party not only surprised Shiv Sena but also managed to almost triple its seat count from a meager 31 in 2012 to 81 in 2017. With the inclusion of four independent winners in the BJP, the party is all set to lay its claim on the mayorship of Asia’s richest civic body.

BJP’s rise has left little option for Sena but to get into an alliance with the Congress. However, Uddhav is unlikely to commit that blunder and also put the state government in danger.

While the BJP core leadership in the state will decide its further course of action, rise of Fadnavis is a good news not just for Maharashtra but also the BJP.
