BMC Municipal Corporation Election 2026 Result Date and Time: Elections for the prestigious Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) – considered one of the most important civic bodies in the country – were held today. The BMC, which has an annual budget of over Rs 74,000 crore, plays a major role in governing India’s financial capital.

A total of 1,700 candidates contested for 227 seats in the BMC. The last election to the civic body was held in February 2017, and since then the corporation had been operating without an elected council. The posts of mayor and deputy mayor remained vacant, adding to the political significance of the election for all major parties.

The counting of votes is scheduled to take place on January 16 at 10 am. Votes will be counted at 23 designated counting centres across Mumbai, each functioning under the supervision of the respective Returning Officers (ROs).

The corporation had finalised counting centres for all 227 wards. Each venue was equipped with strong rooms for the custody of election materials, including Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). According to PTI, officials said arrangements had been made to ensure transparency during the counting process.

Security arrangements and key political contenders

Preparations for polling were completed on Wednesday, with EVMs and election materials distributed at 23 divisional centres. As reported by PTI, a total of 10,231 polling stations were set up across the city, and 64,375 officers and staff were deployed for election duty.

To maintain law and order, more than 25,000 police personnel, including senior officers, were deployed for polling and vote counting. The BMC also introduced a geo-fencing and live vehicle tracking system to monitor 2,865 vehicles used for election duty. BEST buses, private vehicles, taxis and state transport buses were also placed under tracking.

Politically, the BJP-led Mahayuti, which includes the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, faced a keen contest from the reunited Thackeray cousins—Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena (UBT) and Raj Thackeray’s MNS. Congress, the NCP, the Samajwadi Party, the NCP (SP) and other parties were also in the fray for the BMC polls.
