The power struggle between Delhi BJP President, Manoj Tiwari and Union Sports Minister Vijay Goel might be the reason behind all three Municipal Corporations of Delhi – North, South and East, not yet announced the leaders of their respective houses, Indian Express reported. The report states that although these were not constitutional positions, they are still expected to and are normally filed within 2 weeks of the elections of the Mayors of the House. Indian Express reports that earlier this month, the Union Sports Minister Vijay Goel had issued an invitation to all the Bhartiya Janata Party leaders from Delhi, including all MPs and MLAs for an event aimed at welcoming the newly elected candidates into the civic body.
Indian Express quoted sources and said that councillors, Jai Prakash from the NDMC, Shikha Rai from the SDMC and Santosh Pal from the EDMC were being considered for the roles of the Leaders of the House in the three corporations. But the party members had decided on reconsidering their names after they had attended Vijay Goel’s May 16 event. Indian Express also reports of an alleged “explicit” order from Manoj Tiwari, asking councillors to skip the event.
Although, the BJP, in a press release on May 12, had announced Shikha Rai as the Leader of the House in the SDMC, something that has been now put on hold. Despite the MCD results being announced on April 26, and the mayors of North Delhi, South Delhi and East Delhi being elected on May 18, May 19 and May 22 respectively, the leaders of the House are yet to be announced. Although, house meetings of all three municipal corporations have been scheduled next week.
