Following allegations, that Zakir Naik’s NGO Islamic Research Foundation (IRF) made a donation of Rs 50 lakh to the Rajiv Gandhi Charitable Trust in the year 2011 when the UPA was ruling the central government, the Bharatiya Janta Party slammed the Congress. In a BJP news briefing, Union Minister for Law and Justice Ravi Shankar Prasad questioned the Congress party on Naik funding. The minister asked as to why didn’t Congress return the donation of Rs 50 lakh to IRF. He accused the Congress of allegedly using a bribe to shelter illegal and anti-nationalist activities. Prasad went on to cite sources from UPA’s letters. He said that there were a few people in the UPA government who tried to shield Zakir Naik.

Questioning the validation of the foundation the BJP leader asked, “Is Rajiv Gandhi Foundation duly registered under Foreign Contribution Regulation act. If so, on what terms and conditions? Does it also include you will get money from outside and you will also get money from an NGO getting money from outside?” Ravi Shankar said that the Islamic research foundation gave Rs 50 lakh to Rajiv Gandhi foundation in 2011 while the Congress initially had denied the fact.

Prasad claimed that since a formal govt view was conveyed in the Parliament that the security agencies had identified 24 TV Channels which were a threat to security environment, which included Peace TV. So, he questioned, “Why was this Rs 50 lakh not returned in 2012?”
