On Wednesday, actor Kamal Haasan launched his political party in Madurai, Tamil Nadu called ‘Makkal Needhi Maiam’. This should have been a major concern for other parties in Tamil Nadu, however, BJP leaders in the state only appeared irked by the situation. While speaking to The Indian Express, P Muralidhar Rao, the BJP general secretary, Tamil Nadu said, “We are not worried about the new political party. Bharatiya Janata Party has its support base and ideological attraction, and we would like to go ahead with that.” Rao further added, “We are closely watching the situation as it is still evolving.”
During the launch of the political party, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was one of the attendees. Other than Arvind Kejriwal wishing Kamal Haasan good luck on his political journey, the Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan released a video message conveying his thoughts on Haasan’s decision to join politics. In his video, CPI(M) leader Pinarayi Vijayan said that his decision will enrich the state of Kerala, and embolden the vision of secularism, socialism and pluralistic society.
N Chandrababu Naidu, the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh and the chief of TDP congratulated Kamal Haasan on his political journey. Recently, the alliance between BJP and TDP went sour the TDP complained about the Central government “ignoring” Andhra Pradesh. Alon with this, BJP leaders in the state have publicly demanded to snap of ties ahead of state elections due next year. Sources in BJP said the party’s state unit did not find any merit in continuing the four-year alliance for either electoral advantage or its own growth in the state.
BJP general secretary Rao dismissed Chandrababu Naidu’s congratulatory message to Kamal Haasan and called it “social courtesy.” He said that it will not have any impact on BJP’s plans in Tamil Nadu, he said, “Kamal Haasan has acted in many films in Telegu and Chandrababu Naidu has close connections with other actors as well. He (Naidu) made the call in that context.”
