Several users took the BJP MP Udit Raj to task for apparently suggesting that beef eating can ensure medals at the Olympics. In a tweet he had said, “Jamaican athlete and Olympics Triple Gold winner Usain Bolt went on to win nine Olympic gold medals despite being born in poverty after his trainer advised him to eat beef twice a day.” However, when the statement raked up a controversy, the BJP MP sought to backtrack, saying he had made the statement to highlight the lack of sporting spirit among Indian athletes. Talking to India Today TV, the MP said that Indian athletes fail to perform even as the government spends a lot of money and moreover they don’t live in a “poor country” like Bolt’s Jamaica.
By questioning the lack of sporting spirit among Indian athletes, Udit Raj reminded Indian sports fans of socialite Shobha De, who had questioned the lack of sporting spirit among Indian athletes at the recently concluded Rio Olympics. She had said that Indian athletes were interested only in taking selfies, wasting money and opportunity. While several users took the BJP MP to task for apparently suggesting that beef eating can ensure medals at the Olympics, some couldn’t stop from making fun of him.

Incidentally, BJP has been at the forefront of advocating beef ban and ban on cow slaughter int eh country. The MP later sought to downplay the controversy, tweeting, “My tweet is not even remotely connected to advocate beef eating rather it is reproduction of Bolt trainer statement.”
