The BJP government in Haryana has altered the name of Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) citing reason that it bears similarities with the name of former Chief Minister of the state Bhupinder Singh Hooda. A political slugfest has erupted with Congress flaying the ruling BJP dispensation over the move. The authority was called Haryana Shahari Vikas Pradhikaran in Hindi. In English, it was known as Haryana Urban Development Authority, according to Indian Exopress report. Now the government has decided to call it Haryana Sahari Vikash Pradhikaran in Hindi as well as English, the report says. Congress alleged that BJP government is worried because of increasing popularity of its senior leader Hooda. The move comes after Hooda was faing heat over alleged irregularities in various land deals during his tenure. Hooda has said that if the BJP government felt anything wrong had been done, it should initiate action.
The decision was taken during a state cabinet meeting chaired by Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar yesterday. Speaking on the government’s decision, Health Minister Anil Vij said that similarities in the names of Hooda and HUDA used to create a lot of confusion. It is was difficult to differentiate between the two names. That’s why we changed the name, he said. Taking a dig at the Hooda, Vij said that People say Hooda will be jailed but only those who are aware of the case can understand what it means Hooda or HUDA, according to IE report.
The state Cabinet, in a meeting chaired by CM Manohar Lal Khattar, took the decision on Thursday. After the meeting, Health Minister Anil Vij said that similarities in the names of Hooda and HUDA used to create a lot of confusion. It is was difficult to differentiate between the two names. That’s why we changed the name.” He added, “People say Hooda will be jailed. But only those who are aware of the case can understand what it means (Hooda or HUDA),” Vij said. Hooda is facing a CBI probe in at least three cases — involving reallotment of a 3,360-sqm institutional plot to Associated Journals Limited (National Herald) in Panchkula, alleged irregularities in allocation of industrial plots at Panchkula, and an alleged scam in land acquisition in Manesar (Gurugram). Two weeks ago the CBI had questioned Hooda in connection with a case of alleged irregularities in land deals in Manesar. Congress has accused the BJP governments at the Centre and in the state of misusing such agencies and unleashing witch-hunt and political vendetta.
“The BJP government is worried because of increasing popularity of Bhupinder Singh Hooda. They can change name of HUDA, but they won’t be able to remove the name of Hooda from the hearts of the masses,” spokesperson of Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee Ran Singh Mann said.
Notably, ,HUDA is a well known name in urban areas of Haryana, including Gurugram and Faridabad, because of residential plots offered by it to various sections of society. It came into existence on January 13, 1977, under an Act.
In 2016, Gurgaon was renamed as Gurugram. The state government had said then that the decision was taken on the basis of the representations received at several fora that it would be appropriate to rename Gurgaon as Gurugram. “Haryana is a historic land of the Bhagwat Gita and Gurgaon had been a centre of learning,” an Official spokesman was quoted as saying by PTI.
