A car carrying Rs 3 crore, belonging to BJP was stopped by police in Ghaziabad. The grey Mruti Swift was going from Ghaziabad to the Lucknow office of BJP and was stopped near Model Town area at NH-24 on Thursday. The car occupants showed the letter of permission after divulging the details of the money transfer. The officials however took them to the Police station to verify it with the Income Tax Department.

The car (HR 26 AR 9662) was halted by the Police in the morning hours as a part of routine check by the traffic police. After inquiring about two travel bags kept at the back seat, they were informed about the huge cash being carried in them.

The IT officials later reached the police station and recorded the statements of Siddhartha Shukla and Anoop Aggarwal, the two occupants. A separate inquiry is due by the IT department later.

The occupants also showed a letter of possession that said, ‘This is certified that the Bharatiya Janata Party central office, New Delhi, is sending party fund Rs 3 crore (Three crore only) to BJP state office, Uttar Pradesh, for party activities thru Mr Anoop Agarwal ji. The bearer is our party worker of Uttar Pradesh unit. His mobile number is…you are requested to cooperate for safe transfer.’

Only after the verification was done, the car and its occupants were relieved, without any detention or arrest though.

BJP’s general secretary Arun Singh told that it was a routine transaction between the two party offices and is properly in the records. However, the IT department’s Kanpur branch is still looking into the matter.

While UP BJP treasurer, Rajesh Agrawal, said he was unaware of any cash being sent, state BJP president Keshav Prasad Maurya said the party’s central office had sent the money to UP for construction of district-level offices. Maurya said the cash was supposed to be distributed across different districts.
