Ever heard of someone addicted to eating mud every day? Year in, year out, for decades and decades? Sounds bizarre, right! Well, this is what a man from Jharkhand is doing every day that has shocked everyone. A 99-year-old man from Jharkhand, Karu Paswan says can’t survive without eating mud. A resident of Sahebganj district, Paswan has developed a craving for mud and gobbles around one kilogram of it every day.
Karu, who claims to have been born in 1919, said that his addiction to mud started when he was just an 11-year old. He said that he is eating a kilo of the stuff every day. But, the reason behind his addiction to mud will shock you even more. Karu was forced to consume mud because of the acute poverty he was then facing. But little did he know that what started due to poverty, will eventually become a habit. “I was really frustrated with my financial condition, as I had to feed ten children. I wanted to die and hence started eating mud. But later I developed an addiction to it and now could not refrain myself from having it,” he said.
However, the strange thing is that despite having such a habit, Karu is fit and healthy. He was also awarded by Bihar’s Sabour Krishi Vidyalaya in 2015 for this act. The elder son of Karu, Siya Ram Paswan said the family member tried to stop him a couple of times, but he would not listen to them. “We tried to stop him a number of times, but he doesn’t listen to us. He picks up pieces of mud from here and there and eats it,” Siya Ram Paswan said. Karu’s craving for the inedible stuff is thought to be a form of Pica syndrome where a person develops an appetite for substances without any nutritional value.
Another such incident was reported in Uttar Pradesh where Rameshwar, a farmer from Muradabad district was eating mud on a regular basis for 17 years. He too was absolutely fit and healthy and had no problems of digestion or any kind of gastric disease. He had started eating mud after he suffered from a disease wherein blood used to come out from his mouth. The doctors at that time told him that there is no cure for his disease, following which he started having mud as his ‘bread and butter’. Rameshwar claimed that he consumed at least 500 grams of mud every day.
