Bijepur by-election result Highlights: BJD’s Rita Sahu wins with huge margin, BJP second, Congress bites dust

In a big relief, Naveen Patnaik-led BJD has won Bijepur by-election by a huge margin. The voting for Bijepur by-election took place on Saturday last and around 72 percent voters exercised their franchise.

In a big relief, Naveen Patnaik-led BJD has won Bijepur by-election by a huge margin.  The voting for Bijepur by-election took place on Saturday last and around 72 percent voters exercised their franchise. As many as 85 polling booths were set up for the bypoll. In the 2014 assembly election in Bijepur seat, 81.86% voting was recorded.

The seat fell vacant after the death of Congress MLA Subal Sahu in August last year. There were as many as 13 candidates in the fray but the bypoll had become a triangular contest between BJD, BJP, and Congress. Their respective candidates were Rita Sahu, wife of Subal Sahu, Ashok Panigrahi, and Pranay Sahu.

1.50 pm: It is reported that workers are already celebrating at Odisha CM and party president Naveen Patnaik’s residence in Bhubaneswar

1.40 pm: BJD candidate Rita Sahu leads with a huge margin of 40,248 votes after 19 rounds of vote count.

1.30 pm: Some reports say that BJD supporters are already celebrating as their candidate Rita Sahu has maintained a massive lead against the BJP and Congress.

1.10 pm: After 16th round: BJP – 84,969 votes, BJP – 48,182 votes, Congress – 6,451 votes

12.55 pm: After round 14 of voting: BJD candidate Rita Sahu extended her lead to 32, 579 votes.  Ashok Panigrahi of BJP is trailing by big margin.

12.50 pm: After round 13 of voting: BJD candidate Rita Sahu extended her lead to 31, 229 votes.  BJP’s Ashok Panigrahi is trailing by big margin.

12.40 pm: After round 12 of voting: BJD candidate Rita Sahu extends her lead to 28,282 votes. BJP’s Ashok Panigrahi is trailing by big margin.

12.26 pm: 11 rounds of voting has been completed. BJD leads by nearly 25000 votes. BJD gets 59298 votes, BJP 34131 and Congress 2980 votes.

11.50 AM: After round 10th of 21, BJD’s Rita Sahu is leading BJP’s Ashok Panigarhi by a big margin.

11:20 AM: Reports are coming from Odisha that ruling BJD in the state was leading over BJP by 12,000 votes in Bijepur. Counting is underway and Congress is at third.

10:50 AM: According to reports, BJD nominee Rita Sahu was leading by a margin of 2906 votes over her nearest BJP candidate Ashok Panigrahi after first round of counting of votes. Meanwhile, Congress nominee Pranay Sahu has so far got 315 votes.

10:30 AM: BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said that BJD was using government authorities and large sums of money for their benefits. The EC officials had then said that they would look into the matter.

10:20 AM: It has been learnt that on February 16, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan had launched BJP’s campaign for the Bijepur by-elections in Odisha.

10:00AM: Ahead of the polls, BJP had approached the Election Commission of India (ECI), alleging that ruling BJD was using government authorities and large sums of money for their benefits to win by-election in Odisha’s Bijepur.
