There seems to be no end in sight to the trouble to Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim, who is serving a 20-year jail term after being convicted in two rape cases. In the latest shock to Dera chief Ram Rahim, the CBI on Thursday filed a charge sheet against the rape convict and two doctors for allegedly forcibly castrating 400 followers of the sect. Ram Rahim has been charged along with doctors Pankaj Garg and MP Singh. According to officials, they allegedly castrated the men at the Sirsa-based Dera Sacha Sauda. The charge sheet has been filed in a special court in
The big setback for Ram Rahim has come after the agency had registered the case of alleged criminal conspiracy for voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means among other charges under the Indian Penal Code against Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh and others in 2015. The case relating to the alleged castration of 400 devotees was registered on the orders of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
Earlier, Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh was sentenced to 20 years in prison for rape. The sentence was passed by Jagdeep Singh, a special CBI judge, in a makeshift court in the Sunaria jail where Ram Rahim, 50, was lodged since his conviction. Media reports said Ram Rahim broke down and asked for forgiveness with folded hands when the sentence was read out. He then refused to leave the courtroom, in the jail library. Singh had arrived in Rohtak in a helicopter, landing on a helipad near the jail located on the outskirts of Rohtak.
The judge pronounced two sentences of 10 years rigorous imprisonment in each of the two rapes that date back to 2002.
Ram Rahim was found guilty of rape in a case that stemmed from an anonymous written complaint in April 2002 that he had sexually exploited two female followers. The case was registered by the CBI in December 2002 on the directions of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The CBI filed the charge sheet against the Dera head in Ambala court in July 2007. The charge sheet mentions sexual exploitation of two ‘Sadhvis’ (women followers) between 1999 and 2001. The special CBI court framed charges against Ram Rahim under sections 376 (rape) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC in September 2008. Between 2009 and 2010, the two complainants recorded their statements before the court. The special CBI court shifted from Ambala to Panchkula and the case against Dera chief was also transferred to Panchkula CBI Court. In July 2017, the court ordered daily hearing and arguments of prosecution and defence were concluded on August 17, 2017.
