Delhi’s iconic Pragati Maidan has been creating a lot of buzz recently due to the demolition activities going on. While some have criticised the move, the India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO) has claimed that a world convention centre will come up in its place and it will be an even better structure. It has been four days since the demolition of the modern architectural landmarks like the Hall of Nations and Hall of Industries began, and now many other pavilions like the Himachal and Punjab are reportedly gone too. Meanwhile, ITPO has unveiled a layout plan for the redevelopment of Pragati Maidan. It is a body under the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, which has been tasked with the redevelopment work of Pragati Maidan.

According to The Indian Express, the Integrated Exhibition and Convention Centre (IECC) project contains plans for seven exhibition halls, a convention centre, an administrative block, and an underground parking. The work on traffic management in and around the place will go on simultaneously with the project, as told by Chairman-Managing Director LC Goyal to PTI. The traffic plans will include a six-lane divided tunnel connecting Mathura Road to Ring Road across Pragati Maidan, eventually making Mathura Road signal free through U-turns and subways at crucial junctions. It will not only provide better access to the complex but will also be good for the general public. The total cost of the project will be Rs 2,254 crore and architects from Delhi-based Arcop Associates and Singapore-based Aedas Pvt Ltd will be working on it, according to an IE report.
The exhibition-cum-convention complex which is being made at Pragati Maidan will reportedly have world-class features like skywalk connectivity with metro and seven modern exhibition halls. “The IECC project goes beyond Pragati Maidan. It will add to the grandeur and stature of the city of Delhi and also relieve the general public of traffic congestion in this area,” India Trade Promotion Organisation CMD LC Goyal told PTI.
The complex at Pragati Maidan will have a huge basement for parking which can contain 4,800 vehicles at a time. There is a plan for building a hotel in the area too. Goyal had added, “The iconic Convention Centre will be at par with the best in the world. It will be on an elevated podium with unique curved sloping facade incorporating local flavour with a window to Delhi having a 360-degree view of surrounding areas such as India Gate, Supreme Court, etc.”
ITPO has also said that the exhibition halls, after the landmark project is completed, will also hold several auto, defence and South Asian expos. Here are five features that the ‘World Convention Centre’ at Pragati Maidan will have after the completion of the project, according to an IE report:
a) Single halls of 1,000 sq mts and continuous spaces of 25,000 sq mts,
b) Elliptical Convention Centre (50,000 sq mts) will be encased in red stone, Dholpur white stone, glass-reinforced concrete as well as glass,
c) It will have curved-sloping facade and a 4.5 m elevated podium,
d) The building will have more than 28 meeting rooms, and multi-function halls,
e) There will be three helipads on the rooftops due to international requirements.
