Bharat Bandh 2026: India is on its way to a nationwide general strike or Bharat Bandh, today, February 12. As the working class reunites, trade unions will conduct the one of the largest protests in Indian history. Commonly called as Bharat Bandh, the strike is likely to affect the public sector, especially industrial labourers, farmers, and workers in the informal sector.

Called jointly by the national trade unions, it has received a nod of support from rural worker groups, employees and teachers from Central and State Civil Services, workers from Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs), and independent trade unions. Nearly 30 crore workers across 600 districts of India are set to participate in the bandh.

Bharat Bandh February 12: State-wise impact

The Bharat Bandh will affect states like Odisha, Assam, Kerala, and West Bengal. Significant disruptions are expected across schools, banks, and other departments.

Delhi NCR

So far, the Delhi Education Department has not issued an official directive to shut down schools due to the Bharat Bandh.

Odisha

Odisha is expected to have the most severe impact of the Bharat Bandh. Trade union leaders have declared a near-total shutdown, with strong support from industrial workers, public sector employees, and rural groups. For residents, wholesale markets, transport services, and government offices may remain closed in some, but not all, districts of Odisha. Public transport, including buses, is likely to take a serious hit. Given the halt, some schools might individually decide to shut operations for the Bharat Bandh today.

Assam

According to an ET report, Assam will face a total closure in all urban and semi-urban areas. The public transport service may partially shut, keeping some parts of the state active. Residents might see closed markets and commercial establishments, largely in urban districts. Government offices might also witness some closures, as employees and staff associations might participate in the Bharat Bandh.

Kerala

Kerala, known for its strong union culture, is likely to be severely affected due to the state-wide participation. Facilities such as public transport, local markets, and educational hubs may remain closed. However, banking services will continue with scanty staff.

West Bengal

At the heart of the Bharat Bandh 2026, West Bengal has always had a strong presence of trade unions. Reports reveal that markets, public services, and banks will especially face disruptions today. Bank employee unions like AIBEA, AIBOA, and BEFI will be on a strong move. Public transport will function, but on a limited scale.

States like Maharashtra, Chennai, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Punjab have not reported any disruptions in services so far.

Telangana

Authorities in Telangana have not declared an official holiday of banks, schools, and public transport, so far. Schools in Telangana are functional. However, travel disruptions are expected on the road, as protests are likely to affect commuters.

Bharat Bandh 2026: What’s open?

Hospitals and emergency services will function as normal, and essential services like ambulances will also face no disruption. Private office and IT companies, along with essential supply stores, will also remain functional.
