Torrential rain in Bengaluru is wreaking havoc and flooding several localities thereby adversely affecting daily life and more than it, it has entered streets, houses and vehicles too causing immense financial damage. But more than anything else there has been a tragic loss of life. In the last 15 days, nine people have lost their lives in road accidents caused due to potholes created by the downpour that drew sharp criticism from the public. The sorry state of Bengaluru following the rains has drawn sharp criticism from the opposition BJP too, which alleged that chief minister Siddaramaiah has failed to do his duties. CM Siddaramaiah, however, flayed the opposition for “politicising” the deaths. He said the removal of encroachments and desilting of stormwater drains would be intensified in the coming days.
Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi has sought a report from the Karnataka party unit on the poor state of roads in the rain-battered city following the demise of people allegedly due to potholes, PTI reported. The apathy of the state government towards the condition of people has drawn reactions from all walks of life. People flooded Twitter with pictures and comments, some trolling, some voicing their grievances. Here’s a look at how the social media reacted to the Bengaluru rains:
Bengaluru Potholes the blame game; Karnataka govt blames BBMP which blames its engineers in turn contractors , who say too many Vehicles (RTO makes money on & under the table) and rain cause them. People lose lives. @thekjgeorge says you are tarnishing Bengaluru’s Image pic.twitter.com/QyEP44s7FU

Sad to see loss of so many lives in #Bengaluru related to rain (Getting washed away). Even citizens have to take care and not take risks

I love rains, but seriously Rain God, either stop Bengaluru rains or get BBMP to fix the roads. Can’t get inundated every time it rains!

WHAT A JOKE: Bengaluru Mayor claims Rs 7,000-cr spent on roads to make it world-class but rain ruined it. City destined to live with crater.

Siddaramaiah and George, who toured rain-affected areas today, also faced the ire of residents who complained that there was no one around to save them when water entered their houses, PTI reported. BJP state unit president B S Yeddyurappa also visited the rain-hit areas and blamed Siddaramaiah for the deaths. The BJP leader also announced a compensation of Rs one lakh to kin of deceased.
