The police on Monday said that the terrorist had opened fired at them. Khalid was the operational head of the terror group. Quoting the Director General of Jammu and Kashmir Police S P Vaid, PTI reported, “He was killed in a joint operation by the Jammu and Kashmir Police’s Special Operation Group, local police, the CRPF and the Army.” The police said that Umer Khalid was involved in major attacks in Kashmir with the most recent one being that of a Special Police Officer and his seven-year-old son at Handwara.
According to the PTI, Khalid was operational in the area for last two to three years and carried a cash reward of near about Rs 7 lakh on him. The police carried out search operations in the Ladoora area upon receiving information about various militants being present in the area. These search operations resulted in a gun battle when the militants started to fire at the search operation officials. After the firing began, more troops were rushed to the spot and the JeM operational head was killed in the gun battle.
The police also suspect Umer Khalid to be a part of the recent attacks on the BSF battalion headquarters near Srinagar airport and the District Police Lines at Pulwama that were carried out by the Jaish e Muhammad (JeM) terrorists, PTI reported. Khalid was a top terrorist in the area and was operational in making recruitments for terror outfits.
