Three Muslim men beaten up in the alleged case of ‘love jihad’

In a shocking incident, three men in Baghpat (Uttar Pradesh) court premises were allegedly beaten up by the Hindu Yuva Vahini workers. The three Muslim youth were beaten for their alleged involvement in ‘love jihad’. A Muslim youth and a Hindu woman had come from Punjab for a court marriage. The youth was also accompanied by his two brothers. On knowing that the man belonged from a different community, the Hindu Yuva Vahini caught them at the lawyer’s chamber itself and beat them up. As per a report by ANI, the District minister of Hindu Yuva Vahini, Roopak Kumar alleged ‘love jihad’ and said they are going to file an FIR against the men, while the district vice president, Kuldeep Thakur added on to the allegation, saying the case had links in Kashmir.

Police soon reached the spot and after rescuing the trio from the Yuva Vahini workers, took them in its jeep. The three brothers and the woman had allegedly run away from Punjab and a case is registered against them in Barnala, as per the report. However, Baghpat Police refrained from tagging the label of ‘love jihad’ to the case. A video of the physical assault — in which the right-wing men beat up the three brothers while dragging them from the court to the police van, even as police can be seen watching — went viral on Sunday. While the woman was not beaten, another video showed the attackers abusing her for not being able to “find a better match for herself” even as a woman cop is seen taking her to the police van.

“It is too early to comment on what exactly happened, we are probing the whole incident, everything should not be linked to ‘love jihad’,” Jayprakash Singh, SP Baghpat said. Baghpat Police has conveyed the information to Punjab police, and a police team is to reach the city soon. A case has also been filed under relevant sections of the India Penal Code (IPC) against unidentified Yuva Vahini workers. The police are in the process of identifying the men seen in the video so as to push the investigation further.
