Union Minister Babul Supriyo has fuelled a fresh controversy after seeking a ban on Pakistani singers in Bollywood. The minister has said that he has no problem with the singers from the neighbouring nation in particular but their nationality is the only thing that bothers him. In a video going viral on social media, the minister notes how cricket and music — despite being traditionally considered avenues that can ease tension between the two neighbouring nations — have not proven effective. Raising concerns over state-sponsored terrorism from across the border, Supriyo observed that such instances were continuously on the rise and that the time had come for Bollywood stars to take a stand against Pakistani artists. Supriyo’s statement comes after numerous ceasefire violations by Pakistan and the recent terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir.

In his appeal, Babul Supriyo has demanded that a song sung by Pakistani singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan in upcoming Bollywood film Welcome To New York be withdrawn and be dubbed by someone else. Notably, in September last year, a resolution was passed to ban Pakistani actors from the Hindi film industry by the Indian Motion Picture Producers Association (IMPPA). The decision by the body was taken in the wake of the Uri terror attack that had left 19 jawans dead.
Every citizen of this beautiful country is a proud Indian…No one needs to prove his patriotism by opposing an artist just bcoz he belongs to another country
Don’t u dare question any 1’s patriotism Mr RSS Minister

Meanwhile, Supriyo has drawn flak from a section of Twitterati. One such tweet wrote, “Rahat Fateh Ali Khan is an artist. Certainly not a terrorist. @SuPriyoBabul da how could you be so insensitive towards an artist being yourself in the same profession? It’s so unfortunate. Do you think that only you people from BJP are patriots?” Another tweet attacking Supriyo said, “Didn’t expect this from a singer.. @SuPriyoBabul @RFAKWorld #MusicallyIndia #MusicHasNoBorders.” Replying to the attacks, Supriyo said, Bollywood too has a national responsibility.
