Shia Central Board of Waqfs has removed 27 ‘Mutwallis’ or caretakers of endowed properties, including Maulana Kalbe Jawwad and Congress MLA Nawab Kazim Ali, both of whom have been involved in bitter spat with Uttar Pradesh Cabinet minister Azam Khan.

Board’s administrative officer Syed Ghulam Sayyeden Rizvi said a departmental inquiry has been ordered against Jawwad in two cases.

Jawwad, who has been removed from the post of caretaker of three Waqfs — Sajjadia Kadeem and Jadeed, Imambara Jhaulal and Rau-e-Sarkar, all in Lucknow, — today alleged that action was taken against him at Khan’s behest and challenged the Board to prove the charges against him or else he would take legal action.

Jawwad and Khan have levelled allegations of corruption against each other in connection with the affairs of the Shia Central Board of Waqfs.

Inquiries have also been ordered against some other caretakers, Rizvi said.

Congress MLA from Suar Nawab Kazim Ali, considered Khan’s arch rival and who has been involved in a turf war with him in Rampur, has been removed from Waqf Rampur.

Majority of the Waqf or endowed properties are located in Lucknow, Bareilly, Rampur, Bijnor, Muzaffarnagar and Meerut in the state.

The official said new caretakers or management committees have been appointed at all these places.

Jawwad, when contacted, alleged that action was taken against them as they were against Khan and dubbed it as an act of political vendetta.

He alleged that caretaker of Waqf Rauz-e-Sarkare Hussain Maulana Raza Hussain was removed for lodging complaint against the cabinet minister.

He said Khan’s efforts were directed towards integrating Shia and Sunni boards.

Jawwad said he had no interest in becoming the caretaker, but dared the Board to prove allegations against him otherwise he would take legal action.

The Maulana said he would also see whether the Board meeting in which decision was taken to remove the caretakers was valid or not.
