Assam flood situation improves

Though the flood situation in Assam showed considerable improvement today, over 36,000 people in 54 villages of four districts of the state continued to be affected, Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said.

Though the flood situation in Assam showed considerable improvement today, over 36,000 people in 54 villages of four districts of the state continued to be affected, Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said. Till yesterday, nearly 70,000 people were affected by the flood across 84 villages in eight districts. The death toll in the current wave of flood stands at 34 across the state. As of now, the affected districts are Jorhat, Morigaon, Kokrajhar and Goalpara.

Among them, Jorhat is the worst affected with over 25,000 people still suffering, followed by Goalpara with nearly 6,500 and Kokrajhar with nearly 3,000 people hit by the flood at this moment, ASDMA said. Authorities are running eight relief camps in two districts, where 1,493 people have taken shelter. Nearly 2,500 hectares of crop area are still under flood water across the state, it said. Currently, Brahmaputra’s tributary Dhansiri is flowing above the danger mark at Numaligarh in Golaghat.
