Asaduddin Owaisi, President of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) attacked Bharatiya Janata Party for its decision on banning illegal slaughterhouses in Uttar Pradesh. The muslim leader called the BJP, ‘hypocrit’ and lashed out at the party and said “BJP’s hypocrisy is that in Uttar Pradesh cow is mummy but in the Northeast it’s yummy.” The statement came in the wake of Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath cracking a whip on the illlegal abattoir across the state. The new UP Chief Minister, within hours of swearing in had called out for a ban on illegal slaughterhouses and had gotten two slaughterhouses sealed in Allahabad. Soon, Bihar government followed suit. The Uttar Pradesh government then put a blanket ban on smuggling of cows. Although the decision got a nod from several ministers including Minister of Urban Development Venkaiah Naidu and UP minister Sidhharth Nath Singh, the move was strongly condemned by AIMIM. The move is expected to affect the leather industry adversely. In a report, Tapan Nandi, Convenor Chairman for German Investment in India of the Council of Leather Export said, “although the crackdown on illegal slaughterhouse cannot be questioned, the ban will affect the domestic supply of raw material and since the illegal units were a part of the supply chain, a short supply chain is expected.”

Owaisi’s comments took Twitterati by a storm. This is how people reacted on Twitter:
