Artha Tatwa group chief Pradip Sethy, who was arrested over three years ago in connection with the multi-crore rupees chit fund scam in Odisha, allegedly made an attempt to commit suicide inside Jharpada jail here, officials said today.
Jharpada Jail Superintendent Rabindra Swain said Sethy, who has been lodged in the high-security prison since May, 2013, sustained minor injuries when he tried to cut his wrist with a sharp object late last night.
He was provided medical treatment and his condition is stable, the jail officials said, adding security near Sethy’s cell has been strengthened after the incident.
The alleged suicide bid was apparently aimed at scaring the jail officials, they said.
Sethy’s wife visited the jail this morning to inquire about his health condition but could not meet him as no visitors are allowed inside the prison on Sundays.
Sethy has been in Jharpada jail here after being arrested by CID of Odisha police, which initially probed the chit fund scandal before CBI took over the investigation in 2014 following a Superme Court order.
Aartha Tatwa group is accused of duping investors of crores of rupees. CBI has already submitted chargesheets against Sethy, former BJD MLA Pravat Tripathy, and others for their alleged role in the scam.
