Anupam Kher becomes FTII chairman, Twitterati break into political mudslinging

Veteran Bollywood actor Anupam Kher has been appointed as the chairman of the Film and Television Institute of India.

Veteran Bollywood actor Anupam Kher has been appointed as the chairman of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Information and Broadcasting (I&B) ministry officials said today. Kher replaces Gajendra Chauhan, who had a controversial tenure as the chairman of the institute based in Pune. Chauhan’s term ended in March. Kher’s appointment, however, triggered political mudslinging. While some claimed Kher has been awarded because of his proximity to the PM, others targeted those who are not happy with his appointment. Some users, however, wondered why there was an uproar over Kher’s appointment for his work puts him squarely in the league of film legends in the country.

In a press release, Ministry of I&B said, “Shri Kher who has appeared in over 500 films is a recipient of the Padma Shri in 2004 and the Padma Bhushan in 2016 for his contribution in the field of cinema and arts. The veteran star has won many national and international awards including the ‘Filmfare Award for Best Performance in a Comic Role’ five times. He has appeared in acclaimed international films such as the 2002 Golden Globe-nominated Bend It Like Beckham, 2007 Golden Lion award-winning Lust, Caution and 2013 Oscar-winning Silver Linings Playbook. He has appeared in more than 100 plays and has also authored the book ‘The Best Thing about You Is You’.”

“I feel deeply humbled & honoured to be apportioned as the Chairman of iconic #FTII. I will perform my duties to the best of my abilities,” Kher tweeted.

A user, who identifies himself as Lame Monk, tweeted, “Why so much uproar over Anupam Kher becoming FTII President ? Every Govt keeps its key people in influential positions. Happens everywhere.”

Sidhaarth Dabas‏ tweeted in a sarcastic tone, “Atlast #AccheDin for Anupam Kher has arrived awarded d post of Chairman of #FTII..congratulations @AnupamPkher hope u also get 15 lac check”

Some users even targetted Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal. “AAP demands resignation of Anupam Kher & want #kejriwal to be FTII chairman,” wrote Santosh.

Twitter use Sonam Mahaja said, “Gajendra Chauhan wasn’t fit cuz he wasn’t a great actor, Anupam Kher isn’t acceptable because he’s a great actor, #FTII maange Kejrilal.”

Another user EngiNerd said, “Waiting for FTII students to protest against Anupam Kher saying, if he can’t teach acting to Sikander Kher, how will he teach us?

Paresh Rawal Fan, tweeted, “Mr Anupam Kher is new #FTII chairmen. Arvind Kejriwal ji will continue to work as film critic. #AnupamKher”. In another tweet, it said, “Yes. Anupam Kher is new #FTII chairman only bcz he is BJP supporter. I never seen him in any movie or play.. what does he do for a living?”

Tehseen Poonawalla‏ congratulated Kher. “Ideological differences apart, many congratulations to Anupam Kher on being appointed chairperson #FTII ! He deserves it. @AnupamPkher”.

Another user @iAbhishek_J said, “500+ films, 30+ Awards, 35+ years of work experience yet Anupam Kher became chairman of FTII because his wife is MP ~ Liberal Logic.”

Samar‏targetted Modi government, saying, “Anupam Kher to replace #FTII Chief Gajendra Chauhan? So Modi govt thinks that besides intellect & sycophancy they are same even in acting?”

Kundan Pandey‏ said, “Anupam Kher has acted in more films and theaters than all the trolls combined would’ve watched in their lifetime. But they’ll judge! #FTII”

Following the controversial tenure of Chauhan, Kher has a big challenge in front him to take the premier institute to new heights.
