Samajwadi Party MLC Sarojini Agarwal on Friday resigned from the party and joined BJP in Uttar Pradesh. Agarwal joined BJP in the presence of Rita Bahuguna Joshi, Mahendra Singh and other saffron party leaders. Agarwal is an MLC from Meerut. It is believed that she is close to senior Samajwadi Leader Azam Khan, according to Aaj Tak. In the press conference, Agarwal said she was unhappy with the way the party was treating its founder Mulayam Singh Yadav. Her resignation along with other three SP leaders recently is likely to help the entry of five Uttar Pradesh ministers, including Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, in the Upper House. At present, CM Yogi Adityanath, Deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya, Dinesh Sharma, Dev Singh and Mohsin Raza are not a member of any House. All of them took oath on March 19th and within six months they must all be members of a house. The deadline will end on September 19.

However, the opposition has accused the BJP of poaching and engineering these resignations to ensure the entry of the Chief Minister and other leaders through the back gate. During BJP President Amit Shah’s recent Uttar Pradesh, two SP and one BSP MLCs had resigned and joined the BJP.

Earlier this year, four of SP legislators including senior leader and party founder Mulayam Singh Yadav’s longtime associate Ambika Chaudhary resigned on January 21, 2017 from the party. Chaudhary announced that he left the SP to join the BSP for a decisive battle against the BJP in the state. Chaudhary had been a Cabinet minister in all SP governments in the state.
