Ludhiana Municipal Corporation (MC) Election results 2018: Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aam Party (AAP) has witnessed another crushing electoral defeat in Punjab, around a year after its dream of ruling the state was shattered by the Congress party in Assembly elections last year. The Ludhiana MC election has been dominated by the Congress, which has won 62 out of 85 wards in Punjab’s biggest municipal corporation. The main opposition party in the state, AAP, could win in just one ward. The BJP has won in 10 wards and its ally Shiromani Akali Dal – 11. Independent candidates have won in 4 wards.
As many as 494 candidates contested in Ludhiana Municipal Corporation elections for 95 wards of the city. The contesting parties were AAP, Congress, BJP, SAD, Lok Insaf Party.
The Congress was leading in a majority of wards as soon as counting started in the morning on Tuesday.
In the Punjab Assembly elections last year, AAP had won 23 out of 117 seats, while the Congress had won 77. The SAD-BJP alliance could win just 17 seats. Some high-profile candidates including comedian-turned-politician Bhagwant Mann had lost in the Assembly polls.
The Ludhiana municipal election result hints at an apparent loss of popularity for AAP as the party could win just one ward out of 95.
The result also shows a continuing trend of rising popularity of Congress in Punjab. In 2012, the SAD-BJP combine had swept Ludhiana municipal corporation election. The alliance partners had also won then in Amritsar, Jalandhar and Patiala municipal elections. Along with this, the SAD-BJP has won 26 Nagar panchayats and three municipal councils – Jagraon, Machiwara and Sanehwal.
