Amit Shah in Amethi: The BJP chief is visiting Congress' bastion today. Shah and Union minister Smriti Irani will unveil a slew of projects in the area. The development assumes political significance as it comes barely three days after Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi's visit, according to reports. It has been learnt that Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will accompany Shah on Tuesday. Smriti had arrived in the area on Monday. Notably, Gandhi and Irani were locked in a high-pitched electoral battle in Amethi in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. Here key things to know about Amit Shah's visit to Amethi Local Congress leader of Amethi Jang Bahadur Singh had announced his decision to join the BJP, just a day ahead of Shah's visit to the Lok Sabha constituency of Rahul Gandhi. Singh, who was a BSP MLA from 2003 to 2007 before joining the Congress, said he was "saddened" by the policies of the Congress and felt "enthused by the development-oriented politics" of the BJP. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Irani managed to reduce the Congress leader's victory margin from around 3.70 lakh votes in 2009 to 1.07 lakh in 2014. In the 2017 UP Assembly elections, the BJP won six of the 10 Assembly seats falling under the Amethi and Rae Bareli parliamentary constituencies. Four of these were in Amethi. Party sources said the visit of the senior BJP leaders was aimed at sending a clear message that the current dispensation believed in all-round development and was not meting out "step-motherly treatment" to any area. The Congress vice president had during his visit here on October 5 accused the BJP governments at the Centre and in Uttar Pradesh of re-inaugurating the projects launched by the previous UPA regime in the district and neglecting his constituency.
