In a major embarrassment for Rahul Gandhi ahead of second phase of Gujarat assembly elections and subsequent results, farmers today held protests and raised slogans against Congress President-elect in Amethi. Protesters demanded that their land that was given to Rajiv Gandhi Foundation should be returned to them. The agitators also asserted that they should be given employment else they would demolish the structure built there and continue to protest. In the recently concluded Uttar Pradesh civic body polls, BJP had emerged victorious in Amethi. However Amethi is considered as a Congress stronghold. It is also Rahul Gandhi’s parliamentary constituency. In this year’s assembly elections, Congress lost in all the seats of Amethi.

Earlier, during a visit to Amethi in October, Rahul Gandhi had targeted the Prime Minister on GST and said Narendra Modi should hand over power to the Congress if the NDA government fails to provide employment to youths and redress the problems of farmers. The Congress will execute the tasks within six months, he said.

Rahul had said the Centre should work on two major issues — welfare of farmers and employment of youths. “Agar yeh nahin kar sakte hain…. Agar Modiji nahin kar sakte hain toh phir keh dein ki main nahin kar sakta hoon aur ab Congress party aa jaye woh mera kaam kar de. Aur hum woh kaam 6 mahine ke andar karke dikha denge (If Modi can’t do it then he should say it that he can’t do it and now the Congress should come and do my work. We will do it in six months),” Rahul told a chaupal at a ground near the Lucknow-Varanasi national highway.

Union minister Smriti Irani and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had earlier assailed a trust headed by Congress president Sonia Gandhi for allegedly not restoring a piece of land acquired for setting up an industrial unit to farmers after its closure, insisting it amounted to “land grab” Adityanath said the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation Trust chaired by Sonia Gandhi had “grabbed” land in the name of running a manufacturing unit- Samrat Cycles “We will defeat the designs to grab the land in the name of Samrat Cycles by the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation Trust…these are the values of the past when it was the son-in-law grabbing land in one place, while on the other hand, the son himself is doing it…this will not be allowed in Uttar Pradesh,” the chief minister said in an apparent reference to Robert Vadra and Rahul Gandhi
