Aam Aadmi Party leader Amanatullah Khan was arrested on Friday following the raids carried out by Delhi’s anti-corruption branch earlier in the day. A PTI report says that as of now, the officials have recovered Rs 24 lakh in cash and two unlicenced pistols. The ACB, which reports to Delhi L-G, has been probing Khan’s role as chairman of the Delhi Waqf Board. The raids and arrest come a day after the Delhi Police had issued a summon to Khan to join the ongoing probe. The investigation is in connection with a 2016 complaint. Meanwhile, the Delhi Police is also filing a separate FIR in connection with the recovery during the raid.

Khan is facing allegations over illegal appointments of several existing and non-existing posts during his tenure as Delhi Waqf Board boss. ACB Chief Madhur Verma said that Khan was arrested after ‘incriminating material’ and other evidence were established during the searches and recoveries, which were carried out today.

The Friday investigation is linked to the 2016 complaint that was filed by Revenue department’s Sub-Divisional Magistrate (Headquarters). The 2016 complaint said Waqf Board appointments. In 2020, the ACB had filed an FIR over these allegations under 120-B of the Indian Penal Code and Section 7 of the PC Act.

Previously, ex-ACB chief Special CP SK Gautam, had written to the LG secretariat demanding the removal of Khan form his post as he was allegedly proving to be a hindrance in the ‘fair probe’. The AAP MLA was also alleged to be a ‘criminal bully’.

Meanwhile, the Aam Aadmi Party backed the MLA, calling his arrest “a new conspiracy” of the BJP to implicate him in “a fake case and defame” the Arvind Kejriwal-led party. “AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan has been arrested in a fake and completely baseless case. Nothing was recovered from either his residence or office,” the party said in statement.
