Air India scandal row: An MP needs to come to House by plane sometimes, says Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan

A hearing is awaited in the matter in Lok Sabha on Wednesday.

Shiv Sena, MP Ravindra Gaikwad, Air India, airline ban, no fly list, Lok Sabha Speaker, Sumitra Mahajan, GaikwadNaresh Agrawal of Samajwadi Party raised the question in the Rajya Sabha, “Can airlines ban any Member of Parliament from traveling for discharge of his official duty? be barred.” (PTI)

After hearing several defense arguments for Shiv Sena MP Ravindra Gaikwad who allegedly assaulted a staff member of Air India and afterwards was barred from several airlines by being placed on the ‘no fly list’, Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan said, “Its a different matter whose fault it is and what happened but an MP needs to come to the House sometimes by train and also by plane.” She said hopefully a solution can be taken out through talks. Many MPs have come out in support of Gaikwad, Naresh Agrawal of Samajwadi Party raised the question in the Rajya Sabha, “Can airlines ban any Member of Parliament from traveling for discharge of his official duty? be barred,” PTI reported. An FIR has been filed from both sides, Gaikwad and Air India, blaming each other for misconduct. Agrawal questioned can a person be barred before his alleged misconduct has been proven. Agrawal said, airlines banning MP Gaikwad , just goes to show their ‘dadagiri’.

Civil Aviation Minister, Ashok Gajapati Raju said, “We have good safety regulations but never in my dreams expected a Parliament Member to be caught.”

Rajni Patil from Congress, said “I have given notice in Rajya Sabha over VVIP culture issue that has come up, all MPs are not the same as shown.”

Earlier today from Gaikwad’s constituency, Osmananad, his supporters protested and organised a bandh. They forced shop owners to shut down their shops. Anandrao Adsul of Shiv Sena raised issue of ban imposed on Gaikwad and requested the Speaker to take up the issue with the government.

The Centre and Uddhav Thackeray led Shiv Sena said a thorough probe would be launched to scrutinise the events and bring out the culprit. The Sena member said that he is being threatened and has gone into hiding and will be present on Lok Sabha hearing on Wednesday.
