The AIADMK has moved the Election Commission of India accusing Puducherry Chief Minister and Congress leader V Narayansamy of violating the code of conduct for polls. In a letter addressed to the Chief Election Commissioner, the AIADMK said that the Puducherry CM was extending freebies to the public in the form of pre-dated cheques.

AIADMK wrote that Puducherry Chief Minister V Narayanasamy was misusing the funds from the Chief Minister’s Relief funds and was giving the money “to his own party members.”

The opposition party has alleged that the cash payments were issued as pre-dated cheques to the public for patronizing the Congress party in selected regions of Puducherry.

As per the AIADMK, the amount in the account is not adequate and the bank authorities were asked to release payments whenever the account is refilled. The party alleges that this way, the payments will be released without anyone knowing.

While acknowledging that since the payments are being made in phases, and the money transfer is still being done, AIADMK also accused the Puducherry CM of misappropriating funds of the exchequer and violating the Model Code Conduct. The party has now requested that the payments be stopped with immediate effect until the Lok Sabha election concludes.

The model code of conduct kicked in with the announcement of the Lok Sabha election schedule by the Election Commission of India on Sunday evening. The code of conduct bars political parties and leaders from appealing to the caste or communal feelings of the voters, bribing voters, erecting banners or flag masts and such without the permission of the owner and so on. The model code of conduct rules ranges from anything related to speeches, processions, portfolios, the content of election manifestos, polling booths, polling day besides the general conduct in order to hold elections freely and fairly.
