Ahir protest live: Over 200 people were detained while several others sustained injuries as police and protesters demanding the formation of an Ahir regiment in the Army clashed in Gurugram on Friday.
Police said that hundreds of protesters had gathered at the site at around 10:30 AM, and tried to block the national highway, reported PTI. When police started detaining them, some protesters started pelting stones.
Police said in the ensuing clash, both police and protesters were injured. Assistant Commissioner of Police (Manesar) Suresh Kumar said that the protesters were detained when they tried to block the national highway. He added that police is present in the spot and the situation is under control.
On Thursday evening, Gurugram traffic police had issued an advisory informing commuters to take alternative routes, as the Ahir protest was taking place near the Kherki Daula toll plaza. The advisory said that those travelling from Gurugram or Delhi to Jaipur may take a diversion route from Rajiv chowk to Sohna and then KMP route. Similarly, those commuting from Gurugram to Jaipur may take a diversion from Hero Honda chowk to Pataudi road.

Police said that the detained protesters were sent to different police stations in more than ten buses of the Haryana roadways.

The protest will take place at the Kherki Daula toll in Gurugram.
Gurugram traffic police have provided alternate routes.

Earlier, in March protest by the Ahir community had disrupted traffic on a six-kilometre stretch on the Delhi-Gurgaon highway. The protesters were camping near the Kherki Daula toll plaza since February 4, demanding an Ahir regiment in the Indian Army. The formation of a separate regiment for Ahirs has been a long-standing demand of the community in the Ahirwal region, comprising of the Gurgaon, Rewari and Mahendragarh belt.
