Shashindra Pal Tyagi was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation, along with two others on Friday in the AgustaWestland chopper deal scam. Tyagi had been questioned extensively by the CBI in the past regarding the case. S P Tyagi had held the position of the Chief of the Indian Air Force between 2004-2007. He had been quite outspoken about the country’s need to seriously increase the size of its fleet to match that of Pakistan. Tyagi had given an interview to IE in 2006, where he had said that he had been pressing the government to “order more aircraft”. He had said that India was in a dire need of increasing its air fleet and had to do something in a hurry.
Tyagi had been born in Indore, Madhya Pradesh oN march 14, 1945 and had joined the air force as a fighter pilot at the age of 18, right after his graduation from high school in Jaipur. A couple of years later, Tyagi had fought in the war against Pakistan that had started over the Kashmir dispute. Tyagi was also involved in the war in 1971 against Pakistan. He went to serve as a glorious war hero in te Indian Air Force and led 3 out of its 7 operational divisions. Tyagi had also been the Defence Attaché in the Indian consulate in Saudi Arabia for a while.
Tyagi received te Ati Vishsist Seva Medal in 1994 and the Param Vishishst Seva medal in 2003 for his contributions to the Indian armed forces. Altough, his glorious career in the Indian Air Force has been marred by allegations of bribery and corruptions with AgustaWestland, a unit of Finmeccanica. He has been accused of taking bribes to facilitate the sale of 12 helicopters to India. Although, he has repeatedly denied the allegations and called these allegations baseless. The deal was signed in 2010 whereas I had retired in 2007, he had once told the PTI.
