Two days after hitting headlines and her video and comments going viral on the Internet, Lady Shri Ram College student and daughter of Kargil war martyr Capt Mandeep Singh, Gurmehar Kaur, 20, has fled Delhi. She was targetted for taking sides against the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) after she accused the students’ organisation that is backed by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of trying to clamp down on freedom of speech when it tried to prevent Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students from entering Ramjas College in Delhi University to attend a programme – some of these JNU students have been tagged as anti-national’.
Gurmehar had objected to the unprecedented violence on the campus and put up a video of her’s in which she said that she was not ‘scared of the ABVP’.
On Monday Gurmehar filed a complaint and she was also given protection from the DCW. After her complaint, Swati Maliwal, the DCW Chief said that Kaur gave them a complete list of names who have been threatening her on social media. While talking about the rape threats Maliwal said, “Police must take action against those boys giving rape threats to Gurmehar Kaur and set an example.”
Today Gurmehar withdrew from the campaign. She took to Twitter and she said, “I’m withdrawing from the campaign. Congratulations everyone. I request to be left alone. I said what I had to say. I have been through a lot and this is all my 20-year-self could take.” In another tweet she said, “Please go to the march in huge numbers. Best of luck. To anyone questioning my courage and bravery, I’ve shown more than enough.”
