Ending the 10 day long political drama in Tamil Nadu, Edappadi Palaniswamy took oath as the state Chief Minister today. While that spelled a kind of victory for Sasikala, as she has been able to get her ‘loyalist’ elected as the chief minister despite being jailed by the Supreme Court, but that did not go down well with supporters of former chief minister O Panneerselvam whose downfall was engineered by the incarcerated AIADMK General Secretary. So, even as the AIADMK workers and supporters distributed sweets outside the resort after the Raj Bhavan ceremony ended at the Raj Bhawan, OPS supporters took to streets in protest. Pannerselvam supporters clashed with the supporters of newly appointed minister C. V. Shanmugam. However, the situation was brought under control by the police before it could spin out of control. Injuries and damage to property was kept at the minimum and the crowds were dispersed soon thereafter.

This evening, Palaniswami became the third Tamil Nadu CM in less than three months. 30 ministers in all have taken oath after E Palanisami. However, the story does not end here as the pressure is now on the chief minister to prove his majority in the assembly. The special assembly session has been called  for on the 18th of February and the onus is on Palaniswamy to ensure his MLAs do no desert him for the Panneerselvam camp. Meanwhile, the OPS camp has vowed to fight till they get justice. AIADMK MLA Pandiarajan claimed that his colleagues will not prop up Sasikala’s family rule. “Many MLAs will support only Amma’s rule and not rule of a family,” he said. Another OPS supporter and AIADMK MP, S Semmalai added: “Now, we’ll go back to our party supporters and discuss as to who’ll lead the party next.”
