On the day of Dera Sacha Sauda sanitation drive, when a massive security force is carrying out searches at Gurmeet Ram Rahim’s headquarters, Haryana Minister Anil Vij has said that the money he donated to the religious group earlier was not for Gurmeet Ram Rahim but for the group itself, reported ANI. Defending the transfer of money, the minister further said that a utilization certificate was also taken. He said, “I donated money to Dera Sacha Sauda and not to the Baba, we took utilization certificate also.” He also added, “During elections, we go house to house requesting people to vote for us. If there is a Dera Sacha Sauda house on the way, then we will go there too.” (Chunav mein vote maangne ghar ghar jaate hain, raste mein koi Dera Sacha Sauda ka ghar aaya toh vahan bhi jayenge.)
According to an Indian Express report, Anil Vij had made donations of Rs 50 lakh to Dera Sacha Sauda chief last year. The minister had said that he would have donated more money if he had the power to do so. Following the suit, another minister Manish Grover too had donated money to the religious sect.
The minister was under scrutiny after the chief of the religious group Gurmeet Ram Rahim was convicted of raping two girls on August 26th. The religious sect was convicted by a special CBI court and was awarded a 20-year sentence.
In the ongoing searches which are being carried out by security forces and district authorities, 41 Paramilitary companies, 4 Army columns, Police of 4 districts, one SWAT team, one dog squad and the bomb squad has been deployed. One of the most bizarre findings of the search team was a series of plastic currency which was found in the markets near Dera, reported ANI. The coins were reportedly used to buy things inside the Dera. Among other things, a computer, hard disks and cash were also recovered in the searches.
