As a young couple in Kerala went viral on social media site facebook over alleged moral policing by cops, state police commissioner Lokanath Behera has today said that nobody has the right to do moral policing on any couple. He also added that no couple can be stopped from expressing their emotions in public, an NDTV report has said.

Earlier, a young couple in the state went live on facebook, as two cops allegedly tried to moral police them over their “improper” behaviour. Both, who were unmarried, were reportedly questioned by the police yesterday, for sitting in an “indecent” manner. Upset by questioning, both took to live streaming. After going live, the man alleged that the police accused them of doing something “vulgar”. He also asked what was vulgar when he had put his hand over the girl’s shoulder.

The couple said they were told by cops that they were doing something “immoral”. The woman, while stressing that the behaviour of policemen was an infringement on their right, also said that they may take legal recourse on the issue. The man further said that when the policemen, which included a lady cop as well, accused him of vulgarity, they decided to stream the incident live.

As per the police, both were taken to the police station, as the couple had allegedly made some obscene gestures and a case has been registered against them.

The incident happened days after state Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had pointed out that strict action would be taken against those who indulge in moral policing.
